Band Bluebrain Releases Album as Location-Based App

'The National Mall' is the first ever location-aware album, created by music duo BLUEBRAIN. Available as an app for the iPhone, the music changes and evolves based on the listeners chosen path within the National Mall park in Washington DC. It is the first in a series of site specific compositions the duo plans to release. For more information, visit bluebra.in

I do not have words to describe how awesome this is. I thought that it's next to impossible to surprise me with a new format of music release, but I was WRONG. This is a true art.

A Way To Reveal Album Cover Artwork [Case Study]

I won't teach you a rocket science here, but will tell a brief story on how I made a decent event from "nothing special" within a single day last week.

Background: XSSR Dubstep (a sister imprint of XSSR Music) is a digital music label of my friend, breaks/dubstep producer Mars. I help the label a bit with building online presence and marketing strategies.

Situation: XSSR Dubstep's second release is out in late March, our designer (who is great, and is present on Posterous) has prepared an artwork for the digital 12".

Expected scenario: It's not rock or some mainstream genre, and it's not an album, which has been 10 months in the works. Artworks for such releases - if they exist at all - are almost never announced separately from the release. Booooooring.

Goal:  Quickly and for no additional cost make something more interesting out of the cover announcement.

Actions:

  1. I ask the designer to send me a series of draft versions of the artwork, to showcase how the design was created, "step by step." Fortunately, he was able to prepare 6 images, capturing various stages of the cover's creation, leading to the final version.
  2. I create a Min.us gallery (very nice service) and a blog post on the label's website, where I upload first two pictures. Then make an announcement on XSSR Dubstep social network properties.
  3. Each day after that, I add a new image both to the gallery and to the blog post, making simultaneous announcements on Facebook Page and Twitter.

Result: Cover artwork announcement is stretched into a week (stretched from nada), making fans excited about the final look of the cover, as well as the tracks' names - which appeared on the design only in few days after the initial announcement.

Nice and easy, why don't you try someday? Have you done something similar? I'm sure many of you have, share your experience in the comments

The Chemical Brothers prepare special films for iTunes LP version of their new album

The Chemical Brothers are set to release their seventh studio album, called Further, on June 8, 2010 on Freestyle Dust/ Astralwerks. This album is said to be the band's first to be released with corresponding films made specifically to match each of the 8 audio tracks. The films will be included on an iTunes LP and special edition DVD.

It starts with what sounds like an alien Morse code transmission; Earth bound signals bouncing off the side of orbiting space debris. Snatches of voices found out in the ether cut through the machine fog, drifting across burbling analogue equipment lovingly kept working long after supposed sell-by date. By the time the click and thump of snare and bass drum arrive, the sounds are all-encompassing, swirling around you with dizzying, disorientating effect. Noises come untethered by constraints of volume, seemingly leaping from the speakers with a life of their own. For a band used to dealing in psychedelics, this time around The Chemical Brothers have really pushed the proverbial envelope.

Looking forward to it. Moreover, I think this is the only iTunes LP that I would buy so far.

Gorillaz release 'Escape to Plastic Beach' online game

Gorillaz_game

Simple, but so lovely - reminded me of old console games I had been playing when I was a kid. Try out the Escape to Plastic Beach game, and read more about it below:

"Parlophone has confirmed the release of "Escape to Plastic Beach" - a multi level, multi format game release that takes fans on the Gorillaz journey to their new headquarters on Plastic Beach. The game also includes an MP3 download of the band's new single 'Superfast Jellyfish' taken from their new album 'Plastic Beach'.

"Escape to Plastic Beach" is the first game of its type merging numerous levels of Flash and Unity formats along with a new single MP3 to create an audio, visual, graphical and gaming experience to expand fans' experience of an album. Increasing the experience beyond traditional album release - the game features original artwork, voiceovers from the band and numerous other tracks from the new Gorillaz album.

Gorillaz Bassist, Murdoc stars as the main protagonist in "Escape to Plastic Beach" but will also play the game along with fellow members Cyborg Noodle and 2D - posting scores which fans can view and compete against via a global high score table.  Fans who bought the "Experience" edition of the album had an exclusive preview of the 3D gliding game chapter as part of the extra content offered via the CD.  Experience buyers will also be able to access the entire game in full, for free via their copy of Plastic Beach. Fans can also save their high scores in the members area of www.Gorillaz.com."
