Finally watched 72 Musicians, an indie music film boomed in 2009.
This is a very originally filmed documentary covering topics from drugs and artists' dreams to ruined personal lifes and major labels (learned a lot on the latter, by the way).
Real insights straight from musicians' lips. Definitely recommended.
PS: The so-called "iPhone version" is actually a great hi-res video, despite a bit confusing title.
After reading all the latest stories about OK Go's contradictions with EMI (I'm sure you've heard a lot about it lately) and watching an alternative video for "This Too Shall Pass", which the band filmed after the label prohibited embedding the original one, I can't feel anything but even deeper admiration of the act.
In his November 2009 interview, posted on Dotted Music, OK Go singer Damian Kulash didn't seem to count on viral videos as the only and main promotional weapon, and most probably didn't know that YouTube would bring the band another boost of popularity just few months later. But that the band's "make cool shit" motto works despite anything.
A quote from that interview for your inspiration:
At the end day, make cool shit. It’s so ridiculously oversimplified. It’s true that YouTube is no longer outside of the box or cutting edge. It’s become the main medium for videos. People make their videos for YouTube now, not MTV.
...
Things are exciting. Thinking about it like, “I have a band and I need to figure out a clever marketing plan” – that will always fail. If you look at it like, “I have a band and I want to make cool shit” – if you’re really good at that, it will market itself.
"Between The Buried And Me's inspiring and complex metal masterpiece, The Great Misdirect, is the Amazon MP3 Daily Deal (February 18th). Released in the fall of 2009, The Great Misdirect is the newest mind-melting chapter in the bands celebrated career. You can get the critically acclaimed and fan favorite album that was included in several "Best Of 2009" lists for only $2.99. Don't hesitate on this offer as it will only be good for one day!"
Received another press release 20 minutes ago, about another rising rock band. Almost canned it (hey, it's Friday evening and I'm tired - usually I'm more concerned), but then checked out the attachment and whoa - nice photo! Yes, it's just another press shot, but there's something catchy in it and its idea. Am I wrong?
Listened to the music, loved it, and turns out their website is not bad at all as well.
Feeling refreshed, always good to see bands caring about their image.
Not that heavily fascinated by the content (have to confess though, I love watching footage from NYC, especially since I've never been in the States yet, lol). But the concept is fun, good job!
